The Medalist A girl, her friend, and her young brother travel through time and space to battle It, a dark cloud that has imprisoned their father and threatens the universe. Headstrong female lead. Exciting tale. Strong endorsement of family. Strong religious component. For those of a political bent, one could easily initiate a discussion of totalitarianism.
Thistle and Thyme: Tales and Legends from Scotland by Sorche Nic Leodhas (sixth-grade level). ASIN: 9997483294. Out or print	Honor Book The author provides a second collection of tales and legends from the Celtic world. Although these stories involve romance, bravery, magic and the occasional speck of humor, the material is far to dated and the language to idiomatic to hold much interest for modern readers.
Men of Athens by Olivia Coolidge. Houghton Mifflin, sixth-grade level. ISBN:  0395067278. (1974 reissue) Out of print	Honor Book A collection of stories and historical snapshots of the glory days of Ancient Greece. I wish this book were still in print because it's an ideal tool for sixth-grade social studies teachers. The language is conversational yet doesn't speak down to readers. The content is superb and has not been upstaged by recent scholarship.
